Var vi fåglar (Artists' books), (2024)

Handbound artists' books (cloth, French sewing) with bound pencil on paper drawings (1 drawing/book).

26 x 18,5 cm (11 books)

2024

Through pencil on paper drawings and handbound books, this body of work uses fragmented storytelling as a method to tell a larger story of a bird's flight and how places and people connect over time and space.

When a small bird disappeared somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean during the fall of 2017, this seemingly insignificant incident became a starting point, and a never ending source of inspiration for Rebecca Jansson. In 2017, the Colombian artist Alejandra Bonilla sent a stamp to Jansson, with the motif of a small Colombian bird to fly from Bogotá, Colombia, to Sweden, through airmail. Though the bird never arrived, but instead got lost on its way up north, this incident became a source for deeper reflection about topics such as identity, migration, borders, and the longing to find one's place in the world.

This series of work Var vi fåglar (Artists' books) is an extension from the previous project Were we birds / Var vi fåglar (2023) – this time with the book as both a medium and a presentation tool.
